Mona Lisa

Leonardo Da Vinci, Mona Lisa1503–19. Painted between 1503 and 1517The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world"

However, Leonardo seems to have taken the portrait to France rather than giving it to the person who commissioned it. According to contemporary biographer Giorgio Vasari, the artist lingered over the portrait for four years and ultimately left it unfinished.

The Starry Night

Vincent Van Gogh, The Starry Night, 1889.

The Starry Night, completed in 1889, is not only one of his most famous works, but also one of the most famous paintings in the world. Yet van Gogh and his beloved painting were not always as famous as they are today. And even today, few people know a great deal about his artistic process. Most are satisfied to know his name and vague 'facts' about his mental health.

Van Gogh was seeking respite from plaguing depression at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy in southern France when he painted The Starry Night. It reflects his direct observations of his view of the countryside from his window as well as the memories and emotions this view evoked in him.

The Scream

Edvard Munch, The Scream, 1893.

The Scream is a composition created by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in 1893. The Norwegian name of the piece is Skrik, and the German title under which it was first exhibited Der Schrei der Natur. It stemmed from a panic attack that Munch suffered in 1892. He described how it occurred, as he was strolling along a path outside Kristiania (now Oslo): “The sun was setting and the clouds turned as red as blood. I sensed a scream passing through nature

And absolutely, what makes The Scream most relevant and terrifying is not the person screaming, but the disinterested, ambiguous figures stationed several meters behind. Who knows what the distant figures feel, if they feel anything at all

“Kan kun være malet af en gal Mand!” the writing, hidden in the top-left of the piece, reads "Can only have been painted by a madman"(which, frankly, makes it even creepier)
